Police say a 19-year-old was fatally shot Monday in Canarsie.
They say the incident happened behind a building at 1049 E. 104th St. around 1:43 a.m.
Officials say Luis Ortiz, 19, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Ortiz's family says he has a 2-year-old daughter and that he was working toward getting his GED. They say they don't understand how someone could have done this to him.
"We as family members have to deal with this tragedy and I wouldn't wish that on anybody," says Ivory Golden, Luis' aunt. "Whoever did this, I'm hoping they get caught really fast so they don't do this to another family."
Police say no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
