Police are searching for three thieves they say broke into homes in Toms River early Tuesday morning, and in one instance -- a woman woke up to find one of them standing over her bed, and the other -- the burglars got away with a car worth more than $100,000.

Both break-ins happened about an hour apart in the North Dover section of Toms River, just minutes from the Garden State Parkway.  

Business is brisk at Jerry Melia's home security store on Fischer Boulevard in Toms River.

“They are breaking in, grabbing keys and running,” says Jerry Melia, with JM Security Communications.

According to police, the thieves, caught on security camera, entered the first house on Hickory Street through an unlocked first floor bathroom window just before 6 a.m. One of the thieves noticed the camera and turned it toward the wall. They went through the kitchen drawers, took four sets of keys and got away with the homeowners new 2022 BMW M8, with a starting retail value of $130,000. No one was home at the time. 

Police say the second break-in happened an hour later just before 7 a.m. on Tall Ship Court, where they say a woman woke up to find a man standing over her bed. The three men then ran out of the home. They got in through an unlocked first floor window and ransacked the downstairs. 

“I recommend to everybody put a panic button someplace, in the bathroom somewhere it doesn't have to be mounted, in the drawer,” says Melia.

Police say the thieves know where to look, and sometimes follow the victim’s home, looking for particular brands of vehicles to steal, just waiting for the right opportunity. 

“Most of the systems that we put in will record up to 30 days’ worth of record time,” says Melia. “You come back you see a busted window you can go back and review it.”

The suspects are described as three men, wearing hoodies and facemasks.
