A Connecticut man was arrested Tuesday when police say Transportation Security Administration officers at LaGuardia Airport caught him with a loaded handgun in is carry-on items.
Authorities say it is the sixth gun that TSA officers have found at LaGuardia checkpoints this year.
Police say the weapon was discovered when the Newtown resident entered the security checkpoint. They say an X-ray detected something in his carry-on bag. Port Authority police were notified, and the gun was confiscated.
He is now facing weapons charges and a financial civil penalty, which can reach a maximum of $15,000.
Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms only in checked baggage if they are unloaded and packed in a hard-sided locked case. Then the locked case should be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared.
