Police say the weapon was discovered when the Newtown resident entered the security checkpoint. They say an X-ray detected something in his carry-on bag. Port Authority police were notified, and the gun was confiscated.
He is now facing weapons charges and a financial civil penalty, which can reach a maximum of $15,000.
Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms only in checked baggage if they are unloaded and packed in a hard-sided locked case. Then the locked case should be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared.
