Police in Brooklyn have recently issued 36 tickets for cyclists they say ran red lights on a DeKalb Avenue bike lane in Fort Greene.

Authorities say that under state law, cyclists have to follow the same rules of the road as drivers, including stopping at red lights. Those in Brooklyn who haven't adhered to state law have been ticketed.

Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group for cyclists, says many Brooklyn residents approach cycling the way they do walking - giving into the same impulse to cross a street when the light is red.

The group says it plans to help remedy the problem by launching a new campaign to educate cyclists about the rules of the road.
