Police say an officer shot a man in Morrisania who was trying to attack him and another man with a knife and scissors.

Officers responded to 962 Washington Ave. at 8:40 a.m. following a call from a case worker at an assisted living facility about an emotionally distressed 39-year-old man with scissors.

The NYPD says the man had scissors and a 12-inch kitchen knife. When officers arrived, police say the man went after them and then turned their attention to a civilian smoking a cigarette outside the building.

Officers distracted the man and commanded him to drop the scissors, and that's when the man ran at the officers.

One officer fired three gunshots and struck the suspect twice. The suspect was removed to a hospital in critical condition. Four officers are also in the hospital with conditions unknown. 

Police say the 39-year-old had four prior arrests and a documented mental health history. It's unclear if the man was from the assisted living facility.
