A knife-wielding man who attacked a police officer Sunday morning while attempting to get into the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville was fatally shot by police-officers.

During a news conference, Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said the unidentified man was confronted by a female police officer in the rear of the building and began to attack her with the approximately 14-inch knife.

The officer was slashed in the face and is expected to be OK.

Several officers at the scene deployed a Taser, which was unsuccessful. They chased the man down a few blocks to Saratoga Avenue, where he lunged at a different officer with the knife.

Several officers then fired their guns, striking the man numerous times. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

"Every day our officers put on these uniforms, they encounter dangerous situations out in the street," said Rivera. "But it's another kind of danger when someone comes directly into the precinct armed with a knife and attacks our officers."

The name of the man has not been released.
