A man was fatally shot when he aimed a gun at officers in Carle Place, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said in a press conference.
Officers responded to call from a mother reporting that her son was “out of control,” highly intoxicated and refused to leave the residence.
Upon arrival, officers saw that he was holding an object that appeared to be a shot gun.
While an officer was speaking to the mother at the door, the man aimed the gun at him. Police ordered the man numerous times to put it down.
The man continued advancing toward the officer, resulting in him being shot. He was struck once by a bullet and later died at a hospital.
Police learned later that the firearm he held was actually a BB gun.
The suspect had a criminal history including assault, according to authorities.
