The NYPD is urging subway riders to stay awake while they travel to avoid falling victim to thievery.

Police say subway thefts have risen 40 percent since last year and that a full third of the victims were sleeping at the time of the theft.

The NYPD says they have added more transit cops to try and combat subway theft.
