Police are investigating a deadly double shooting in Belmont that left one man dead and a teenage victim in the hospital.
The incident occurred just before 11 p.m. Wednesday at East 187th Street and Bathgate Avenue. Police say they originally got an emergency call about one person being shot, but they also found a wounded teenager when they arrived at the scene.
Officials say that 24-year-old Leonard Hines, of Yonkers, was shot in the chest. The 17-year-old victim was shot in the arm.
Both victims were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where Hines was pronounced dead. The teen is reported to be in stable condition.
Hines' family says he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They say he had just celebrated his birthday on Monday.
Altamese Hines, Leonard's mother, says her son lived near where he was killed and often hung out with friends in that neighborhood. She says she hopes his murder won't remain a mystery, and that his killer gets caught soon.
Police have not yet made any arrests. Anyone with information that can help authorities catch Hines' killer should call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
