A carjacking on the Jackie Robinson Parkway left police searching for a stolen car early Tuesday morning.
Police say a man was changing his tire close to Cypress Hills near Exit 2 when two men pulled up in a dark colored sedan, held up the victim at gunpoint and took his Honda CRV. The victim was not seriously hurt. The suspects are still on the loose.
The incident comes as car thefts throughout our city are increasing, according to officials.
After the city experienced an 890% increase in Kia thefts and a 766% increase in Hyundai thefts just last year, Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD are now turning to Apple AirTags as an option to help recover stolen vehicles.
Attorney General Letitia James has issued a consumer alert to New Yorkers about recent thefts targeting vehicles made by Hyundai and Kia. James says thieves target the vehicles because of faulty switches and a lack of engine immobilizers, particularly in models made between 2011 and 2022.
Once a car is stolen, the NYPD advises the public to call the police.
