Police probe vandalism at Williamsburg church
Police are searching for the vandal who defaced statues at a historic Williamsburg church early Wednesday morning.
Parishioners at Our Lady on Mount Carmel Church on North 8th Street say someone came into an alcove where the statue of St. Jude used to stand, sprayed graffiti on the sculpture and threw it to the ground, damaging it. A figure of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus was also defaced.
Richard Catalanotti, a long-time member of the Mount Carmel congregation, says police were at the church all day yesterday looking through nearby surveillance cameras in an effort to find the culprit.
Catalanotti says the church has received many phone calls from people looking to donate money and help pay for the statues' repairs.
