The person of interest, 26-year-old Curtis White, was apprehended Thursday morning in Pennsylvania.
Police were looking for two suspects connected to the incident: Austin Morrishow, 25, and Curtis White.
Both men had prior charges. Morrishow was arrested in 2018 with a federal charge related to racketeering and conspiracy. White was arrested in 2015 and charged with attempted murder.
Prosecutors say that the incident started at a vigil for another shooting victim. The girl was in the car with her father when she was struck in the back by gunfire. The 5-year-old was initially in critical condition but is now OK.
The NYPD says police found shell casings that match the type of gun found at an apartment that White ran into after the incident. Authorities showed a picture of who they say is White, who was at that vigil, firing a pistol.
Officials say a silver sedan nearby revved its engine and backfired, and that sound was mistaken for gunfire, which White responded to with shots of his own.
White currently faces a federal charge of possession of ammunition after a felony conviction, which could land him in prison for a maximum sentence of 15 years. If Morrishow is apprehended by law enforcement, officials say he will face the same charge.
