Nassau County police are searching for four suspects accused of using a sledgehammer in a smash-and-grab robbery Saturday at London Jewelers in Greenvale.
Witnesses say shoppers ran for cover after hearing sounds of glass shattering inside the jewelry store at Wheatley Plaza.
Police say the suspects entered the store at around 4 p.m., smashed the display cases and grabbed an unknown number of designer watches.
Todd Silverstein, Ben’s Deli chief operating officer, described the scene as chaotic.
“People were running. Kids were scared,” Silverstein said. “Everybody was running.”
“It is definitely unsettling during the day, that is going on, who knows what could have happened if it went the wrong way,” said Dennis Cutrone, of Lloyd Harbor.
“Just shows this can happen anywhere, at any time. Always have to be vigilant,” said Nicole Meyer, of Roslyn.
Police say there were five employees in the store at the time of the robbery.
Police say the suspects took off in a car toward Norther Boulevard.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the case to call Nassau Crimestoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
