Pop Smoke Day brings Canarsie together to honor late rapper's legacy

Family, friends and community members celebrated the life and legacy of late rapper Pop Smoke during the annual Pop Smoke Day.
The Canarsie native, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, was a rising hip-hop star who was fatally shot during a home invasion in the Hollywood Hills in February 2020. He was 20 years old.
Since his death, his mother, Audrey Jackson, has continued his legacy through the Shooting Stars Foundation, which provides resources and opportunities for young people in Brooklyn.
The annual celebration featured a parade through the neighborhood where Pop Smoke grew up, along with activities and community programming for local families.
“He cared deeply about his community," Jackson said. "It helps me get through this because I know people are intentional about coming out to support his legacy."
During the event, elected officials honored Jackson for her continued work serving Brooklyn's youth and preserving her son's legacy.
