A new pop-up COVID-19 testing site has opened for the rest of the week in Highbridge.
The site at West 164th Street and Ogden Avenue saw people lined around the corner on Wednesday. The new rapid testing site is a relief to neighbors at the Bridge Builder Community Center.
The Highbridge section of the Bronx continues to be hit hard by COVID-19. At 46%, the neighborhood has one of the highest seven-day positivity rates in the entire city.
Neighbors say getting tested at the new site has been easy.
The site is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all week, and free K-N95 masks are also being given out.
NYC Health + Hospitals teamed up with local officials to launch the temporary site. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson says she plans to keep expanding.
"We're adding mobile sites. We're going to work with churches, faith-based organizations, community partners asking them if they can be testing sites to make sure that we have that access in the local community,” said Gibson.
Testing will continue at the site until 6 p.m. Sunday, but organizers say they hope the pop-up site returns as it’s clear that the community needs it.
