Travelers passing through John F. Kennedy International Airport this Thanksgiving week should prepare for delays and detours, as the airport faces record-breaking passenger numbers and ongoing construction.

Port Authority officials say a $19 billion redevelopment project, which includes work on terminals 1 and 6 - and roadways in and out of the airport, will make navigating the airport more challenging.

“There are going to be crowds, there's going to be traffic,” said Richard Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “It is going to take people longer to navigate their way through the airport. We urge people to do their best not to bring personal cars, not to increase the number of vehicles.”

Officials recommend using public transit, like the AirTrain or subway, to avoid heavy traffic. Travelers should also plan ahead and arrive earlier than usual.
