Power outages and heavy damage reported after strong storms sweep through New Jersey

At least 24,000 utility customers were left in the dark at the height of the storm.

New Jersey is dealing with damage after strong storms moved through the state overnight.

Wires and trees are down in several areas, including a large tree blocking Route 1 in Edison.

Crews are dealing with a downed utility pole on East 12th Street just off South Wood Avenue in Linden. The pole is on top of a parked van. A large tree is also down across the roadway nearby. On West 12th Street, wires are down as well.

In the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township, a large tree was uprooted in a backyard, with its root system pulled from the ground and damage left to a fence.

Similar scenes were reported across the state.

In Ocean County, a tree snapped in half in Toms River and stretched across a roadway, making travel difficult until cleanup is complete.

In Monmouth County, a tree fell onto a car, while other trees and wires blocked roads and caused power outages.

In Westfield, portions of Lambert's Road and Hillcrest Ave. had to be shutdown because of downed wires.

Utility companies report thousands are without power, with more than 2,800 outages from JCP&L and over 1,000 from PSE&G.

Conditions are improving for air travelers at Newark Airport after a ground stop tied to the storms was lifted.
