Welcome back to this episode of Power and Politics. Everyone. It is full speed ahead for the two presidential candidates. Now that the conventions for both political parties are behind us. Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are laying out their visions for America's economy through more detailed plans. If they win in November news tells Jonathan Gordon is looking at how their two economic platforms are similar and where they stand in stark difference. It's full speed ahead for the two presidential candidates. Now that the conventions for both political parties are behind us. Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are laying out their visions for America's economy through more detailed plans. If they win in November, we're gonna look at how the two economic plans and their platforms are similar and where they stand in stark difference. Our first guest is Peace University Clinical Associate Professor Mark Weinstock. Mark. Are you surprised that a majority of voters particularly in swing states say that the economy is their number one or a top concern? I think what happens is when you have a period of high inflation, it takes a long time for voters to get used to the price shock that comes from experiencing higher prices, especially in things they're shopping for every week and every month, things like their utility bill, their rent, food, gasoline, um, travel all of those things when they become expensive shock voters and give them generally a pessimistic view of how much they can actually buy with the income that they're receiving. Are there any similarities between Trump and Harris's economic plans? Both of them seem to be supportive now of electric vehicles, although Harris certainly by a much greater extent. And Trump seems to have had a, a recent revelation that electrics can't replace combustion engines in his worldview. However, there's an important place for them in the economy. Uh They're also similar on housing in the sense that they have a focus on affordable housing for first time home buyers in the economy, although their approaches are significantly different. Uh another area where they're similar on is both pledge, no, no cuts in our Social Security and entitlement structure. Uh However, the approach that both candidates would take would differ greatly in how to repair a lot of the weaknesses and deficiencies in Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid that are we think exist at the moment. Um The other area where they're the same is trade. Both candidates are extremely protectionist, they oppose unbridled or free trade. On the other hand, here, it's Trump which is much more intense in his viewpoint. So while both are against um outright free trade, uh Trump to the point where we would expect this tariff structure would be a lot more extensive and a lot greater in magnitude than uh Harris's. All right. Now, let's look at some of the differences. Let's talk about Trump's. What are his economic plans and how could this impact everyday people when it comes to Trump? There are two philosophies that he endorses which are in opposition. The first one is this tariff policy for those people who love their undergraduate or high school economics class, they may remember this, but for those who remember it less fondly, we have to recall that a tariff is a tax and although it causes penalties and costs on importers countries that are exporting their goods into the United States, it's a direct tax on consumers. So that means that anything we place a tariff on will allow domestic producers to charge more and will also cause production to be a bit more inefficient, which raises costs as well. So that is going to aggravate inflation. What Trump will do in terms of taking more of the steam out of inflation would be his energy policy. He'd rely less on electric vehicles and encourage more oil and gas exploration opportunities. Uh At one point, the US was becoming almost a dominant global energy power. And I think um given the current geopolitical situation, Trump would want to uh restore that posture And what about harris' economic plans and what it could mean for Americans, the Harris policy of providing first time homeowner home buyers with a $25,000 subsidy in essence, um will generate more demand in the housing market and there's no way some of that won't be translated into higher housing prices. And some of that money is definitely going to go into the pockets of sellers, real estate agents and other people involved in the transaction. Um Both uh Trump and Harris want to build more affordable housing units. But when I say build, uh the Harris plan is to dedicate $100 billion approximately in funds for contractors who will build um starter homes. And the Trump plan is presumed to work more through tax credits that would be issued to builders who would be building in designated areas specifically on the periphery of major and mid-sized cities and the suburban areas to extend the housing supply in those areas. But you have to remember Jonathan that when you talk about something like housing that takes years for the market to absorb those effects. So, uh I don't believe that that's going to have a major impact on home prices. Still to come, push back from elected and Brooklynites on the new mcguinness Boulevard redesign plan. Welcome back. Local elected officials are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to address the mcguinness Boulevard redesign plan. Local leaders like borough president, Antonio Reynoso and public advocate Jumani Williams say that the mayor's plan to install a bike lane on the southern portion of the road does not address the safety concerns. The community has brought up. Brooklynites say cars are not the only issue on the roads. Cyclists are becoming a concern. Others say it is the green paint on the bike lane that makes riding conditions so dangerous. Well, the mayor's office responding to that call in a statement that says, quote, this redesign for mcguinness Boulevard will make this corridor much safer for everyone, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Based on community feedback. The city's Department of Transportation will be extending the protected bike lane from Collier Street to Meeker Avenue while also delivering a new network of bike lanes better connecting cyclists to Meeker Avenue and Point South and adding sidewalk extensions at streets intersecting mcguinness Boulevard Craft distillers across the borough are celebrating a bill just signed into law that lets them sell their products to consumers online. It is known as direct to consumer sales and previously was only available for beer here in New York State. Brooklyn is host to many craft distilleries that say they've had great success selling in person. But that online sales had always been a market. They simply could not tap into all these businesses say it is a chance for the whole industry to level up and compete with bigger companies. The new law covers craft distilleries, ciders and need and it goes into effect in about 90 days. The city got rid of four tons of illegal drugs seized from unlicensed smoke shops by lighting it all up and the mayor got hands on in that effort. He helped toss those bags of seized cannabis, flour and edibles into an incinerator at a waste facility while it seems like a lot. The mayor says the crackdown that sealed more than 1000 shops city wide over the past four months has left them with more than $63 million worth of product to burn. Overall, we're going to destroy four tons of cannabis. This is out of the 200,000 tons that we have that are still out there. 200,000 pounds that we have that are still out there that we are going to put on the road map to being destroyed as well. The administration says the by-product and ash that's left over is actually used as an energy source for surrounding communities. That is all for this week here.
