Welcome back as we jump right back into our conversation with Professor Christopher Malone, previewing an unprecedented presidential debate happening this week, Professor Malone, the last debate, perhaps the biggest lesson that was learned, at least by Democrats. Uh Democrats arguably was that they, they needed a shake up any other takeaways from the last debate that you think can and should be applied to each candidate's approach to this one. I will guarantee you one thing you will not hear Kamala Harris and Donald Trump compare uh challenge each other to a golf tournament that will definitely not happen, which is one of the more odd um you know, uh elements of the last debate where they start talking about each other's golf game, that's not gonna happen. I I think you'll see a much more disciplined debate, at least uh on the Democrat side, the question for Donald Trump is can he utilize this this platform to add to his, you know, his base um politics is about addition, Amanda, we've talked about this time and again, you need to add voters. And what I'm not seeing from the Trump campaign is his attempt to add voters to his, his, uh, you know, hi, his Tally. Um, those suburban voters you were mentioning. Can he reach out to them through the debate performance? And that's kind of what I'm looking for from his side. So, right now we're just days away from each, taking the stage and taking on each other. How do you believe each is preparing for this, this big debate? Well, I, we, we've heard from both sides, both campaigns on this. And Kamala Harris is, uh you know, preparing very diligently wherever she is, she has debate prep, you know, whether she's in Pittsburgh or whether she's in Atlanta or Georgia or Michigan. Uh Donald Trump told us, he said, I don't need to, to prepare, I've been preparing my entire life for debates. So, you know what he's had, having or at least what the campaign is saying is he's having a series of policy discussions with people. So he's not at a, a, you know, at a, uh uh in some room locked away, preparing word for word. Um for this debate, maybe Tulsi Gabbard is helping him and by pretending to be Kamala Harris and some, uh you know, some respects, but Kamala Harris is preparing the more traditional way. Donald Trump seems to prepare on his own time in his own way. And his campaign basically says, you know, what if that's what makes him comfortable, then that's what we'll expect. But um I think that these last few days you'll see and you know, Trump is off the campaign trail for the most part than we expect, but I don't expect him to be doing traditional debate preparation, standing at a lectern against a, you know, a foe that is being impersonated by someone. And then Chris, when we talk about the preparation, I also think that in today's day and age, you've got to consider social media and all of this. How do you think the real time reaction that voters are having online shape, how the candidates are trying to craft their preparation and craft the message that they're able to deliver. And like you said, those two minutes. Yeah, you know, the, the, the greatest part of a debate in my experience, I've been to several uh presidential debates in, in my, you know, in my, my lifetime is the spin room after because the campaigns want to tell voters what they just heard. Um And that, that spin room if you will, that happens physically after a debate when all the reporters are there, Amanda that's happening in real time on social media. So you're gonna see that spin the, it's the same, you know, same process of, of somebody from either side telling you what you just heard, telling you how it benefits their candidate. But, you know, people are pretty smart, they can figure things out for themselves. I think one of the most interesting things just to go back to the Biden debate for a second was within five minutes. You saw Democrats no matter what the Biden campaign was saying, Amanda online, you saw Democrats and just, you know, nonpartisan observers saying, oh my God, this is a disaster. So people are smart, people see what they see. The campaigns will try to spin this. The uh the supporters on each side will be on social media. But you'll know in the 1st 10 or 15 minutes how each candidate is doing because that's normally how a debate, uh you know, unfolds candidates are on message. They're clear they're communicating clearly and people can't be fooled. They're smarter than most campaigns think. Yeah, it, it, it definitely is another factor that they have to consider when they are preparing for these live events that people can react to in real time. Now, we are looking all ahead to Tuesday, but beyond that, you know, hopeful for you that we have a second debate, but we are anticipating at least a VP debate between JD Vance and Tim walls coming up in October. It is a VP debate. So in your opinion, what is at stake in that meet up between those two candidates? Yeah, you know, this is a, this is a tough one for me to, to say out loud. Um Vice presidential candidate debates don't matter much in the history of debate performances. There have been some glitches, there have been some, you know, zingers, but in the end a, a vice presidential debate doesn't really change the trajectory of a race um because most voters are voting for president, not vice president. So with that caveat said, I think it's still well worth watching because what you've seen in this dynamic between, you know, uh JD Vance and, and walls is who is the more common guy, you know, you have one candidate on the Republican side who wrote a, a uh uh a book about the white working class and I'm just a normal guy and then you have coach walls on the other side who has come out and said, you know, that another group of people are really weird. So what you're gonna see them doing, I think is who can out, um, uh, uh, populist the other, who can show that they're more of the people than the other and, and who's more normal than the other. And in that sense, um, the debate will have some meaning, um, if one of the candidates really screws up, that could have an effect on the, you know, the top of the ticket. But most of the time these vice presidential debates really are, you know, the, the, the warm up act and, and that's probably as it should be because most people vote for president, not vice president. Welcome back to power and politics. This week, multiple top officials in the mayor's administration had their homes searched by FBI agents. This is according to a person familiar with the matter who says those agents took electronic devices from the homes of deputy mayor for public safety, Phillip Banks and first deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, who lives with schools chancellor and Phillip's brother David Banks. We're told that agents also seized devices from police commission. Edward Cabin's home and the home of former NYPD official, Timothy Pearson was also searched and we've now also learned that schools Chancellor David Banks, the brother of Philip Banks is also part of this investigation on Friday. He released a statement saying that he is cooperating with a federal inquiry. Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams office has maintained that everyone on his team must follow the law. No charges have been filed for anyone at this point. Switching gears. Now, the city council is taking a hard look at public restrooms in the city and they recently found that most bathrooms at city parks were either closed or had safety or health issues. News twelve's Valerie Ryan shares more about the council's findings as well as her own. There are over 700 public restrooms across the city. If you ever walk into one, you are probably hit with a familiar scent. It just smells really unsanitary. I, I can't describe the smell. That's how bad it is. It's not the best experiences. We visited three park restrooms. Only one of them was inspected by City Council. Some bathrooms are clean, others are just dirty and smell bad. That's what we discovered. The sound view park bathroom was inspected. We found clean sinks but unsanitary conditions on the doors and toilets on a scale of 1 to 10. In your experience, how clean are public restrooms? Five out of I'm being generous here while two other bathrooms in Hunts Point and Castle Hill were not very clean. At Barreto Point Park, there was no toilet paper and a dirty sink in Castle Hill, feminine hygiene products were sitting next to the toilet. I can't the bathroom, the New York City Council report says nearly four out of 10 public bathrooms were littered close to a quarter had unsanitary or hazardous conditions and almost one out of 10 were closed when they were to be open. Some people we spoke with say they will only use park restrooms in an emergency when I absolutely need to while others can't even imagine even if I really have to go, I'm going to find a way to hold it. Well, in a statement, the parks department says the city council report targeted less than 15% of public restrooms saying that this report is a disservice to the department's employees who work tirelessly to make sure our bathrooms are well maintained in sound view.
