The White House COVID-19 response team will be speaking on Wednesday. They are expected to recommend COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for the general public in their briefing.

The White House is reporting that President Joe Biden will be laying out his COVID-19 booster shot plan today. This comes with push back from global health advocates because some low-income countries haven't even gotten first doses to a majority of their population. In the U.S. however, the president is working to get Americans to visit 24-hour vaccine sites and get their COVID-19 vaccine.

This booster shot plan comes as the delta variant is spreading widely, making up for 99% of new cases according to data.

Pfizer-BioNTech submitted their data to the FDA saying that the two-dose vaccine is protective for at least six months. The booster shot may help to maintain high levels of protection. Sources say that the booster shots could become available mid- to late-September starting with people that first received the vaccine like health care workers. However, this plan is getting some backlash.

On Thursday, top doctors in the country will be addressing the nation on their continued response to the pandemic. Those addressing the nation will include Dr. Anthony Fauci, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky and Surgeon General Doctor Vivek Murthy. The address is set for 11 a.m.

This meeting comes as global health advocates are pushing back on the booster shot plan saying that the evidence isn't enough to support booster shots and the U.S. should be sending more doses abroad to low-income countries to stop the pandemic from getting worse. Half of all Americans have been fully vaccinated.

In New York City, our percentages are a bit higher than the nationwide numbers - 74% of adults living in NYC have at least one dose and 68% of New Yorkers have been fully vaccinated. Bronx and Brooklyn both seeing about 60% of adults with both vaccine doses.

Even despite the focus on a booster shot for Americans, the White House has pledged to donate 500 million doses to other countries in need.
