A church in Prospect Heights is remembering a civil rights hero in honor of Black History Month.
People at Abundant Life Church are honoring Sarah Key Evans, a Brooklyn native, for her accomplishments and courage.
In 1952, Evans made a trip from New Jersey to North Carolina as part of the U.S. Army.
During the trip, the bus driver told Evans that she had to move to the back of the bus because she was black. Evans refused and was arrested.
Her case eventually outlawed discrimination by bus companies who determined where people could sit on interstate trips.
Churchgoers say they credit Evans' bravery for the rights they have today.
