Despite the rain and cold, runners turned up to Prospect Park Thursday morning to participate in the annual Turkey Trot: Race for Reconciliation.

The sold-out 5-mile event breaks runners into two waves based on their estimated pace. The yearly race is a tradition for Brooklyn residents and their friends and family.

“I do a turkey trot every year and I saw this online, so I decided to sign up,” said Peter, who came dressed in a Turkey costume.

About three years ago, organizers changed the name of the event to be mindful to indigenous people around the thanksgiving holiday.

“To honor and give back to our local indigenous community, that’s when we chose the American Indian Community House as a partner,” said Prospect Park Track Club president Crystal Cun.

Over $20,000 from the charity proceeds goes to the organization each year.
