Protesters gathered in Staten Island Monday to demand the release of the grand jury testimony in the Eric Garner case.

Garner died after being placed in an apparent chokehold by an NYPD officer this past summer. A grand jury's decision to not indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo sparked waves of protests across New York City and the nation.

Members of Garner's family were among the dozens of people at the borough's Supreme Court for a hearing on whether to open the jury record.

The Garner family says protests were temporarily halted in the wake of the fatal shooting of NYPD Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on Dec. 20. They say that now that both men have been laid to rest, the protests will continue.

Advocates have been calling for transparency in the decision, saying the public deserves to know what the district attorney did during the proceedings and why jurors decided not to indict Officer Pantaleo.

Supporters of the four advocacy groups that filed lawsuits requesting testimonies and documents say they're ready for their day in court now that a start date has been set. A judge declared opening arguments will begin Jan. 29.
