Students of an East Flatbush school painted anti-violence murals in hopes of reducing crime in their neighborhood.
Kahill Lewis, a 13-year-old student at P.S. 109, and his classmates have worked tirelessly for the past two months to produce eight paintings depicting what their neighborhood would ideally look like. The murals span the walls of the Glenwood underpass.
City Councilman Jumaane Williams, a partner on the project, says the students completed the project on their own, with their artistic vision intact.
Students say that if the community rallies behind the idea of becoming more close, much can be accomplished, including a decrease in violent crime.
The next step for the students is to cover the entire underpass with a ceiling-to-floor mural to solidify their message.
