New York City's Public Advocate is calling on the beach season to be extended past Labor Day after beachgoers were left out of the water.
People looking to cool off at Coney Island were not allowed in Tuesday. New York City's beach season ends on Labor Day and no lifeguards were on duty.
James says people will continue to go swimming after Labor Day if the weather remains hot, like it did on Tuesday. She also wants lifeguard staffing to be extended at city pools.
