Public pools opened across Brooklyn and the rest of New York City Thursday.
The 53 outdoor city pools will remain open seven days a week until Sept. 10. They will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. with a one-hour midday break so staff can clean up the pool.
City officials say some pools will offer free sunscreen to protect swimmers.
Other city pools and parks will offer free lunches to children under 18 this summer, according to officials.
Parks Department officials urge parents to never leave children unattended. They also tell residents to swim only when lifeguards are present and obey all posted signs and flags.
