News 12 is on Pump Patrol as we watch gas prices spike once again across the island, the state, and the nation.
According to AAA, the average for a gallon of regular on Long Island is $4.37. That is only a dime short of breaking the record we hit back in March. Prices hit $4.47 on March 11, marking the highest average price we’ve ever seen for regular gas.
Unfortunately, the prices could continue to rise. The European Union's leader is now calling on the 27-nation bloc to ban oil imports from Russia as an added sanction on the country, which could drive gas prices up even higher. That proposal would need to be approved by all member countries. Many of them are landlocked and depend on Russia for fuel, so it will likely face heavy debate.
On Long Island, drivers News 12 spoke to are feeling the pain at the pump.
“There goes my paycheck,” Jim Calderone says. “The prices keep going up and down and up and down.”
Calderone recently purchased a hybrid vehicle and says he’s grateful to be saving some money.
“It gets 50 miles to the gallon,” Calderone said.
The prices are even worse if you drive a truck that takes diesel fuel.
Long Island broke a record this morning. The average price for a gallon of diesel is $6.26, which is up 11 cents from just yesterday. According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of diesel is $5.43, which is also a record high price.
