City lawmakers are pushing a bill that would require parents in the Bronx and the rest of the city to get their kids to the doctor before the end of the school year.Councilman David Yassky and Councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverito want to make physical exams mandatory for all public school students. They say the move is in hopes of getting parents to be more active when monitoring their kids' health.The lawmakers say there are about 240,000 children currently without health insurance. According to the lawmakers, about two-thirds of those children would be eligible for a city insurance plan.The bill would require schools to provide information to parents about available health care options. The lawmakers say they added the provision because parents are unaware of the health care options available to them.
