Some Bay Ridge residents say a particular tree growing in Brooklyn is stinking up their neighborhood and causing a continuous mess.
The ginkgo tree in front of Richard Mahany's home grows fruit that, when ripe, causes a terrible, persistent odor that some residents describe as smelling like rotten food or a baby's diaper.
The fruit, which falls from the tree's branches, also litters the sidewalk and messes residents' cars. Neighbors have petitioned the Parks Department to remove the tree, but officials say they will not tear down a healthy tree.
Parks Department workers say they are no longer planting the female ginkgo trees because of the smell they cause.
