Bright classrooms, a brand-new gym and more space for students to learn and grow are now part of the educational landscape in Tremont.
The new Zeta Bronx Tremont Park Upper Elementary and Middle School campus has officially opened its doors, giving local families access to a modern learning environment close to home.
For parent Dr. Isabel Ventura, the new facility sends a powerful message to students.
"It makes a difference for the children to see the love in the actual structure of the building," Ventura said.
The tuition-free charter school offers daily science instruction along with art, music, chess and sports programs. School leaders say the goal is to provide a well-rounded education that supports students both inside and outside the classroom.
"Besides rigorous academics, we also make sure that we are honing in on social and emotional development for our students," said Noreen Cooke Coleman, a faculty member at Zeta Charter School.
The new campus also has special meaning for fifth-grade teacher Albert Dominguez, who grew up just minutes away.
"Teaching students here is a blessing because I grew up here in the Bronx, five minutes away," Dominguez said.
Families in the community say the new school represents an opportunity for children to access additional resources without having to leave their neighborhood.
"It's not about, 'Oh, just because you're from the Bronx.' No, the Bronx has amazing, amazing places where kids can be better for tomorrow," Ventura said.
