Members of a local fire company held an annual ceremony Thursday to honor their colleagues who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
Ladder 131, Engine 279 in Red Hook lost five men in the World Trade Center towers seven years ago. Thursday morning, their colleagues and relatives gathered at the firehouse to commemorate the tragedy of Sept. 11 with moments of silence and a special Mass.
According to the firefighters, it is a more personal and intimate way to pay a tribute to their brothers.
The uniforms of Anthony Jovic, Rony Henderson, Michael Ragusa, Christian Regenhard and Anthony Rodriguez hang on a wall in the firehouse next to plaques honoring the men.
On 9/11, the five men were on their way to another fire when they got the call to head to lower Manhattan. That call turned out to be their last.
Members of Ladder 131 have been holding Sept. 11 ceremonies since 2002, and they say they intend to continue the tradition.
