The justice system is turning toward rehabilitation rather than incarceration at the Red Hook Community Justice Center.
The center was formed after a beloved elementary school principal was gunned down in 1992. The courthouse has one judge who often sentences misdemeanor offenders to community service, GED classes or drug rehab rather than prison.
Officials say the center gets to the root of offenders? problems and helps the neighborhood in the process by creating productive community members.
