City officials say Red Hook Park Ballfields will be off-limits until 2018.
Last year, the city shut down numerous Red Hook Park Ballfields after finding high levels of lead in the soil. Now, officials say the cleanup is a complex engineering project with multiple levels of government and community involvement.
Officials say they want to be slow and safe while remediating toxic material. They say nearly $105 million will be used to reconstruct the fields' design to suit the community and fix other parks with low-level contamination.
No one was affected by the contamination, and officials say all of the renovations will be completed by 2022.
Anyone with concerns can call the city Health Department at 646-632-6102.
