While many New Yorkers are trying to beat the heat and keep cool, residents in Red Hook say they’re frustrated because their public pool is temporarily closed.

A Parks Department spokesperson told News 12 on Tuesday that the filter plant beneath the pool flooded and damaged the equipment.

The spokesperson added that park employees made the discovery on June 25.

“We’ve been wanting to go to this pool for a really long time, but eventually my mom just said we’re going to have to find somewhere else and go there,” said 11-year-old Jerry Dieudonne.

The Red Hook Pool had another mechanical issue last year -- and it did not open until August.

“We feel like nobody cares about us,” said Margarita Valcarsel, of Red Hook. “We don’t know what to do because we don’t want to go so far away because it’s dangerous.”

The spray showers at the public pool are open, but Dieudonne and his 9-year-old brother, Jayce, want to keep cool in the pool.

“At this point, it’s not going to open anytime soon,” said Jerry.

“It’s really hot, and you have a chance of getting heat stroke,” said Jayce.

The parks spokesperson said they are expecting an updated timeline by Thursday and are hosting a public meeting at the Red Hook Recreation Center that 6 p.m. that night.
