Red Hook students advocate Hamilton Ave. fixes
Several young people from Brooklyn say they've been begging the city's Department of Transportation to fix Hamilton Avenue near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway for the last two years to no avail.
"I've seen a couple times, when I was walking, some people almost got hit," says Andrew Tiburcio, a student with the Red Hook Initiative. "It's dangerous."
The Red Hook Initiative is a nonprofit that aims to help young people solve problems they find in their neighborhood.
Data from the DOT shows at least 14 injuries at the intersection since 2016. Aside from the risk of traffic accidents, the Red Hook Initiative says the intersection has cracked sidewalks, litter and poor lighting.
The DOT says it will meet with the students to figure out how to address their issues.
