The remains of a previously unknown Sept. 11 victim have been identified, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The adult woman, whose name is being withheld at the family’s request, was the first victim identified using the breakthrough technique of forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG). She is the 1,654th victim identified overall.

“We remain committed to the families who have spent 25 years waiting for answers,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote in a statement. “The identification of this victim through forensic investigative genetic genealogy is a powerful example of what is possible when we pair cutting-edge technology with an unwavering commitment to those we lost.”

The Medical Examiner's Office says that “FIGG pairs specialized DNA technologies with genealogical investigative techniques to produce identification leads that are then confirmed by OCME through DNA or other forensic methodologies.”

The office says this new identification marks the latest victim identified since August 2025. Officials say that about 40% of the victims killed at the World Trade Center remain unidentified.
