Rep. Malliotakis calls for U.S. action in Cuban crisis

As the situation in Cuba grows more dire by the day, Cuban American Rep. Nicole Malliotakis is calling on the United States government to act.
She and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) recently reached out to the White House. She hopes the Cuban Caucus, which includes 10 members of Congress, can get the point across.
"This is our chance to speak together in a united voice," Malliotakis said. "Democrats and Republicans that make up this Cuban Caucus, to really push at this time this administration to do something."
President Joe Biden released a statement on Monday calling on the Cuban government to "hear their people and serve their needs."
Malliotakis' mother emigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1959.
She points to the lack of basic human rights and necessities as the main reason for the Cuban uprising. She adds that the people standing up to the government are doing so at great risk and at a great disadvantage.
Over the past few days, Cubans in the United States have protested and asked for more to be done.
Malliotakis says she believes that all Americans, whether they are Cuban or not, should care about what's going on in the island nation.
She says the regime destroyed the lives of so many, including her own family.
"We need to stand as leaders of the free world against communism, " Malliotakis said.
