Rep. Nydia Velazquez is introducing the Ovarian, Cervical and Endometrial Cancer Awareness Act that aims to not just raise awareness but improve access to finding and treating these types of cancers in women.
Velazquez says that early detection is of the utmost importance. Statistics show that Black women have an 80% higher mortality rate when diagnosed with endometrial cancer than white women. In 2018, Hispanic women had the highest endometrial cancer rate among women ages 35 to 59, 50% higher than in white women.
"We have to devote the resources and the intention when it comes to this kind of public policy," said Velazquez. "That has to come from the top down."
