Democratic Rep. Nydia Velázquez says she will not seek reelection in 2026.
Velázquez has represented New York’s 7th Congressional District since 2013. She previously represented the 12th District from 1993 to 2013.
“Serving the people of New York City for over three decades has been the honor of my life. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, nothing I have accomplished would have been possible without your support,” Velazquez wrote in a statement.
New York Attorney General Leticia James called Velázquez a “Luchadora” who fought for the city and state of New York.
Gov. Kathy Hochul also issued a statement.
“Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez is a trailblazer whose leadership has opened doors for generations of New Yorkers. As the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress, she has never forgotten where she came from, and she has never stopped fighting for the people she serves," Hochul wrote in part.
