The Coney Island community had something to celebrate Thursday after progress began at a nearby playground that suffered severe damage in a fire.
Although the playground that was impacted by the fire is still closed, the Parks Department started removing some of the equipment that could be dangerous.
The toddler side of the playground at Asser Levy Park reopened Thursday, along with the green space.
News 12 went to the playground Tuesday and spoke with multiple people from the community after they heard a tree caught on fire and then spread to the playground inside the park.
Books were burned, the equipment was damaged, and caution tape surrounded the area.
The Parks Department says it is working with staff to safely reopen the rest of the playground to the public. Some parents told News 12 when this first happened, they were worried about how long that process might take.
People in the Coney Island community told News 12 they're happy some of the playground is open and they look forward to the repairs.
