A new report claims class sizes are smaller in the Bronx and the rest of the city, but some are saying more needs to be done. The New York Sun reports that the average class size last year for kindergarten to third grade was 20.93, a .2 decrease from two years ago. For fourth grade through eighth grade, the average of 25.17 students in a class from two years ago dropped to 24.75 last year. The drop comes after close to $200 million was dedicated to reducing class sizes. Officials say one factor hampering efforts to decrease class sizes is that the number of classes offered in public schools has gone down. A Department of Education spokesperson, however, stressed that is because there was a decline of about 15,000 students enrolling in school. The president of the teachers' union blasted the findings of the report, calling it "disturbing."
