Pedophiles are living in city family homeless shelters with easy access to children, according to a report released Wednesday.
Staff members of state Sen. Jeff Klein analyzed data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services' online database, which lists the addresses of level two and three sex offenders.
The offenders are required to register with the state under Megan's Law.
According to the report, six offenders were living in six separate city shelters. Klein suggested that the problem might be worse since some offenders give fake addresses. He also said city shelters are not required to perform background checks on residents.
The Department of Homeless Services said it has no record of any sex offenders residing at the facilities and added there is no legal basis for excluding sex offenders from shelters.
