A Brooklyn environmental group has found that 200,000 pounds of raw sewage is being dumped in Coney Island creek on a weekly basis.
"That's 1.4 million gallons a week. That is unacceptable," said Pamela Pettyjohn, of the Coney Island Beautification Project.
A beach-area cleanup scheduled for this weekend was canceled in an effort to keep students out of the contained area.
Local leaders are calling on the Department of Environmental Preservation to clean up the contaminated water.
A spokesperson for the DEP says the agency issued an order for the property owners to stop the illegal dumping and all buildings have completed the necessary work.
