Rescuing Families: Tools stolen from charity puts home renovation in jeopardy

Volunteers are searching for stolen tools from a project they were working on in Hempstead Thursday evening.
The workers were building a home for a family in need when the tools went missing.
Gina Centauro, of Rescuing Families, say they lost $25,000 worth of equipment - which is a big hit to their charity.
Rescuing Families has been working since January to make the house handicapped accessible. The project is now on pause.
Many of the stolen tools were in Vincent Centauro's family for years.
"From my grandfather, from my dad, which I don't have any longer," Vincent Centauro says. "Those were tools that were used every day. I don't have these family members here with me anymore. But I was able to have those tools. It meant the world to me to have those."
A police investigation is underway.
The Centauros are scrambling to raise money through a yard sale Sunday in Franklin Square to replace the tools so they can complete the renovations on the house. They plan to have other yard sales.
"It doesn't just affect us," Gina Centauro says. "It affects every family that we're helping. Without those tools we're not able to help families."
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call Nassau police at 516-573-6353.
