Residents of a Putnam Avenue building in Bed-Stuy say they?ve been abandoned and are fearing for their safety.
Tenants of the building say squatters have settled in vacant apartments. They also say that a fire was started in one of the vacant apartments last Friday. News 12 The Bronx found out the owner abandoned the building after he failed two housing inspections and defaulted on his mortgage. The building?s management, Arco, has also said it stopped managing the building as of December 31 of last year.
The city?s Federal Housing Department says it is in the middle of legal proceedings to seize the building and find a new owner. According to the city, it has made some repairs, but there are still more than 1,000 housing violations on the building. There is no timetable set for when someone will oversee all of the repairs.
