Residents on edge after Legionnaires’ disease found in NYCHA development

The discovery of Legionnaires’ disease inside of a New York City Housing Authority development in Brownsville has residents concerned about their health and safety.
A resident contracted the disease and died back in July of last year at Langston Hughes Houses. Earlier this month, another person was hospitalized with the same ailment.
On Monday, Assembly Member Latrice Walker took to social media to inform her constituents what was happening. Walker says the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is testing the water in building 335-337, where those two residents contracted Legionnaires’.
Walker says the health department will have the results from those water tests in two weeks. In the meantime, they’re taking steps to treat the system before results come back. But that isn’t helping residents feel any easier.
