Hundreds flocked to Coney Island Saturday to participate in the 24th annual Coney Island Sculpting Contest, and it was all for a good cause.
Residents were out in full force to flex their creative muscles and show off their sand-sculpting skills by recreating the historic landmarks of the neighborhood, and whatever else came to mind.
In addition to being a playful challenge, the contest serves to raise awareness and funds for Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.
Seventy mounds of sand were available for people to sculpt to their will, including sculpture artist Matt Long.
Long says the sand of Coney Island is part of what makes it special, since it compacts well once wet and contains few sea shells.
