A Suffolk woman received a surprise on her doorstep Tuesday--six years after she had sent it to another country.

Kristen Hanyo, of East Quogue, saw a package marked "return to sender" in front of her home and was confused as to what was going on.

"I come up the steps and I look on the ground and first I'm like 'What the heck is wrong with this box,'" Hanyo says.

She soon realized it was a package she sent to Guatemala in November 2016.

Hanyo says after staring at the damaged package, she realized what was in the box.

"Then it started to come back to me," Hanyo says. "I'm like 'Oh wait, this is the pair of shoes that I sent to the little girl in Guatemala that I totally forgot about.'"

She sent the shoes to the daughter of an employee as a gift for his hard work.

Hanyo says she just assumed it got where it was supposed to go.

She says the package does not look like how she remembers it.

"I think it's been reinforced at some point," Hanyo says. "It looks like it got crushed and they tried to fix it up a little bit."

She says she's not going to resend the gift through the mail. Instead she plans to hand deliver it.

Hanyo says she did not file a complaint with the post office because she forgot about it.

The post office did not respond to News 12's request for a comment.
