A nonprofit organization held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of a new community fridge in Brownsville.
Services for the Underserved set up the fridge to help residents with the rising prices of everyday goods. The organization says it has expanded the scope of what the fridge provides to the community.
Dr. Jorge Petit, the president and CEO of Services for the Underserved, says this community fridge also helps individuals with disabilities.
"They're the ones that are the stewards. They come, they stock, they clean. They're really managing this process and it gives them not only meaningful activities to do, but sort of employment skills for the future."
The community fridge is located at 421 Chester St.
