New affordable housing units are now open in Spring Creek, and even more are on the way.
The city celebrated the ribbon-cutting Thursday for nearly 200 apartments at 1152 Elton St. A groundbreaking was also held for about 300 more affordable units in the area.
The housing is part of the Gateway Elton Project, a three-phase project to build housing on a former landfill site. The city is working with Hudson Companies and a few other developers to create the apartments, along with new retail space.
The city and developers say they will have put in hundreds of millions of dollars to make the entire project happen when all is said and done.
All phases are expected to be complete by the end of August 2016. In total, the city hopes to create almost 700 affordable units in Spring Creek.
